Congressman Blake Moore's Statement on the Fiscal Responsibility Act
WASHINGTON – Congressman Blake Moore issued the following statement regarding his vote on the Fiscal Responsibility Act.
“When I ran for Congress, I committed to use my role in Congress to reverse Washington’s dangerous debt culture. Tonight, I will vote for the Fiscal Responsibility Act, a significant step toward reversing our federal spending trajectory.
While there is much more work to be done, this historic legislation could reduce our national deficit by $2.1 trillion over 6 years. This bill includes commonsense work requirements to SNAP and TANF to save taxpayer dollars and lift more Americans out of poverty, and it takes back COVID funds and cuts off funding for China through the CDC’s Global Health Fund. President Biden will also no longer be allowed to use COVID as an excuse to stop student loan repayment, and our veterans and national defense programs remain fully funded. In this bill, Republicans are successful in reforming NEPA for the first time in 40 years, which will greenlight more American energy and infrastructure projects without crippling restrictions and procedural hurdles.
Tonight’s ‘yes’ vote is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to support legislation to fix our debt crisis since I joined Congress. After repeatedly voting against Democrats’ tax-and-spend agenda in the 117th Congress, I am ready to stand behind this bipartisan bill to avoid default and deliver results for the American people. Did we get everything we wanted out of this deal? Of course not. That’s the reality of divided government. House Republicans will continue to fight for spending cuts and conservative policies, but the provisions in this legislation are a win for Utahns, and they will put us in the position to achieve more success in the future.”
